--Published in The Alaska Dispatch News, 12/31/2015:
Wilson L. Condon, 76, former Alaska attorney general and Department of Revenue commissioner, died on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at the Anchorage Pioneer Home.
In public and private practice, Condon was closely involved in the most important oil and gas issues facing Alaska over the past 35 years. His central legal achievement was leading the Amerada Hess royalty litigation against oil and gas producers. Facing determined legal and political opposition, Condon helped win $1 billion for the state and set the rules for Alaska to get a fair share for its royalty oil.
Personally, Condon may have been most proud of coaching the 1968 Stanford University crew team to victory.
He died after several years battling the effects of Lewy Body Dementia. A celebration of life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at the Egan Convention Center. Attendees are encouraged to honor Wilson's flare for the cravat by donning their favorite ties.
After working from 1971 to 1980 as an assistant attorney general and then deputy attorney general for the Department of Law, Condon was named attorney general by Gov. Jay Hammond, serving in that position from 1980 to 1982.
He was Department of Revenue commissioner under Gov. Tony Knowles from 1995 to 2002, and then continued his public service under Gov. Frank Murkowski, heading the oil and gas section at the Department of Law from 2003 to 2005.
In between the departments of Law and Revenue, he was a partner in Anchorage law firms where he led the state's complex royalty litigation against North Slope oil and gas producers. Alaska had accused the companies of underpaying royalties to the state. The case settled after more than 15 years of legal battles, with the last settlement agreement signed in 1995.
Condon was born on Sept. 28, 1939, in Livingston, Mont., just north of Yellowstone National Park, where his father worked for the National Park Service.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and in 1963, earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
He went on to receive his law degree from Stanford in 1971. In between degrees, he served as assistant director of student financial aid at Stanford from 1965 to 1968.
Condon was a founding member of the Stanford Environmental Law Society. While there, he served as a member of the Stanford University Crew Board and coached Stanford's freshman and varsity crews from 1961 to 1970.
Condon served as chairman for the Alaska Governor's Commission on the Administration of Justice from 1980 to 1982, was on the Governor's Alaska Gas Pipeline Task Force from 1980 to 1981, was a member of the Alaska Code Revision Commission from 1983 to 1991, served on the board of trustees of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. from 1980 to 1982 and also from 1995 to 2002, and served on multiple state boards and commissions during his tenure at the Department of Revenue.
After leaving state service, he worked at the Anchorage office of K&L Gates from 2005 to 2011, continuing to assist with oil and gas cases on behalf of the state.
Condon is survived by his wife of 41 years, M. Susan, of Anchorage, Alaska. The couple lived in Juneau and Anchorage during his tenure with the state. He is also survived by his sister, Marianne (Dennis) Donnelly of Pocatello, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his father, David and mother, Lorna.
Wilson Condon was a longtime supporter of several nonprofit organizations in Alaska, including the Anchorage Youth Court, KSKA public radio, United Way and the Gastineau Humane Society (animal shelter) of Juneau, Alaska.
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make donations to the Anchorage Youth Court, PO Box 100359, Anchorage, AK 99510 (http://www.anchorageyouthcourt.org/donate.html), or Phillips Exeter Academy, 20 Main St., Exeter, NH 03833-2460 (https://secureportal.exeter.edu/supportexeter/makeagift/Pages/MakeAGiftOrPledge.aspx?source=widget). Our beautiful blue-eyed Nana, a sincere, wonderful and loving spirit, quietly left her tired body and completed her life's journey on January 26, 2013 in Mesquite, Nevada.
Lillie came into this world on June 25, 1925 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City to Marco and Selma Grow. Her birth was both a blessing as well as a tragedy. Later in the afternoon of her birth her mother died of toxemia. She was raised by her grandparents in "Swedetown" and had a happy healthy life.
Lillie was a faithful member of the LDS Church and held many callings throughout her life. She was ward organist at age 12 and continued for the next 30 years in the 23rd Ward. Lillie was proud to be the grand-daughter of Henry Grow, architecnd pioneer builder of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

They had a happy life together and spent many good times camping and fishing the lakes and rivers of the west.
Blaine died in 1964 and 1973 she was blessed to meet and marry Jerold Burt. They enjoyed traveling and rock hunting in the southwest deserts. They have had 40 wonderful years together.
One of Lillie's greatest life accomplishments was the enormous amount of genealogical research she performed and the legacy she left behind for her family.
She was Comptroller for the Utah State Liquor Commission and retired from the Utah Energy Office. She was well thought of by those she worked with and supervised. She was very competent, capable and always worked with great honesty and integrity.

2/20/1919 ~ 5/19/2016
Wilma Fisher DeLand was born in Annis, Idaho (Jefferson County) to Albert Martin Fisher and Martha Alice Harrop Fisher on their ranch in the same bedroom as her six sisters and one brother.
She was raised doing the same work as the ranch hands and could milk cows, pick potatoes, thin beets, haul hay, sheer sheep and any other job that needed to be done. She skipped the second grade and at 18 was elected Jefferson County Rodeo Queen.
She married her husband Walter Ernest DeLand on June 7, 1939 and their marriage was solemnized the following year in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Magna, Utah where she celebrated her first wedding anniversary in the old St. Mark's hospital in SLC giving birth to their first child, Gary. She returned to Idaho the following year to give birth to Gae Lyn. After Walt's service in the Navy during World War II, two more children were born, Loni in 1945 and Lisa in 1953. The family lived in Idaho until Walt was hired as the University of Utah's head athletic trainer and the family moved to Salt Lake City in 1953.
Wilma was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints and served in various callings in the Primary and Relief Society in several different wards. She came from a rich pioneer heritage with family joining the church in Europe and New York, following Joseph Smith until his death and then traveling with Brigham Young and the saints to SLC. One branch of the family was sent from SLC to rescue members of the Martin Hancock handcart group which included ancestors from another family line.
Wilma was a beautiful and gracious lady. She was a spotless housekeeper and always had her makeup on, her hair combed and beautifully dressed as soon as she was awake. She led by example; especially giving service to others. She worked in sales and as a department manager for J.C. Penney and in sales, as a buyer and assistant manager of La Ries in the Cottonwood Mall. When Walt and Wilma opened the Walt DeLand Nutrition Center she was the store manager and also worked as a manager when the store was purchased by Skaggs Corporation. When they left Skaggs, they opened the DeLand Family Nutrition store which was managed by their daughter, Lisa. When Lisa died October 13, 1980, Wilma managed the store until Walt died of cancer in 1982.
Wilma loved traveling (visiting many states, Canada, Mexico and several countries in Europe). She went to Hawaii 21 times with Walt and after his death spent many winters in Hawaii with her sister, DeOnne. She enjoyed golfing and bowling. She loved all of the University of Utah sports, especially football and basketball, where she was honored at a half-time ceremony as "Wilma DeLand Super Fan" and was a member of the Crimson Club. Up until the day she passed away she never missed watching a University football or basketball game. Friends and neighbors always knew when the 'Utes" were playing, as she always put her red "U" in the window and dressed in red from head-to-toe the entire day. When the new Spence and Cleon Eccles Football Center was built and dedicated on August 15, 2013, the trainer's office was named the Walt and Wilma DeLand Athletic Training Room. She was also an avid Jazz fan watching all of their games.
At age 92, she moved to the Olympus Ranch Independent Living Center in Murray, UT. She really enjoyed the last 5 years living in the beautiful facility where she loved the many new friends she made among the residents, staff and management, where she continued visiting teaching until one month prior to her death.
She is survived by her children: Gary Walter DeLand (Kathy), Gae Lyn DeLand and Loni Fisher DeLand (Denise Austin); 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, DeOnne Fisher (SLC), Martha Dean Brown (St. Anthony, ID) Marlene Cooper (Idaho Falls, Id); special cousin, Melva Mae Searl; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughter, Lisa DeLand Vigor (Rick); infant brother, Bert Harrop Fisher; and sisters: Glenda Algood (Dean), Eloise Peterson Hayden (Mitch), and Gae Nell Holland (Clive); brothers-in-law: Lynn Cooper and Robert Brown.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 23, 2016, from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the LDS Revere Branch, 981 East Revere Circle, Salt Lake City, Utah with a viewing prior to the service from 10:00 - 10:45 A.M. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Estates.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the University of Utah Athletic Department in the name of the Walt and Wilma Athletic Training Room, in care of the Spence & Cleon Eccles Football Center at 600 South Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84112.
