- A longtime Tacoma resident died January 19, 2001 in Fremont,California after a short illness. She was the daughter of Catherine Lucy Costello and Cyril Jackson Fairhurst. Catherine was born in Seattle,
Washington on December 19, 1922, one of six children. She was preceded in death by husband John Edward Cantlon, son Francis Aloysius Cantlon, sister Mary Gertrude Rapin, and brothers Cyril Jackson and Alfred William Fairhurst, S.J. Catherine is survived by her sister Dorothy Lucille Unger, her brother Stanley James Fairhurst, and her children: John Edward Cantlon, Jr. (Chimacum, WA); Catherine Lucy Klews (Castro Valley, CA); Michael Stanley Cantlon (Fremont, CA); Susan Marie Portabes (Lahaina, Maui); Colleen Frances Rebello (Lake Oswego, OR); Sharron Ann Kahoalii (Fremont, CA); Marie Clare Lanese (Castro Valley, CA); Timothy Patrick Cantlon (Sunnyvale, CA); Margaret Kay Nadvornick (Spokane WA); 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Catherine graduated from Aquinas Academy and Holy Names College. She attended Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods. Catherine was President of the Tacoma Catholic Women's Club, Board Member of Catholic Community Services, administrator of the Snyder Foundation,and active in other charities both in Tacoma and Santa Rosa, CA where she lived for several years. Her special interests in California were Morning Glory House (a home for AIDS babies) and the Santa Rosa Soup Kitchen. Catherine was extremely talent- ed in every art form from painting to floral design and interior design, the latter two being her business since the death of her husband in 1978. Among her works are the interior design of the Star of the Valley Church and Msgr. Fahey
Center in Santa Rosa, CA. She was a member of the International Furnishings Designers Association and was awarded the Outstanding Unsung Hero Award in Boston, MA in 1990. Services will be held at Star of the Valley Church, 545 White Oak Drive, Santa Rosa, CA on Friday, January 26, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Catherine has requested that donations be made to The Irma Gary House, Tacoma Catholic Worker, 1417 South G Street, Tacoma, WA 98405; or Mid-Peninsula Pathways Hospice Foundation at 65 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, CA 94025.
