- Eugene D. Cook, age 88, of Illinios, formerly a long-time resident of Newnan, Georgia, passed away at 11:10 p.m. August 13, 2008, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois, due to a previous stroke and complications of old age.
He was born in Langdale, Alabama, on August 3, 1920 and called "Lefty", Gene was the middle son of Frank C. and Jewell Gladys (Gay) Cook, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by older brother, Edgar P. Cook of Florida, who passed an 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy Judd Cook, originally of Utah, and their daughter, Mrs. Pameal Spicer, wife of Dr. J. Pat Spicer, all of Illinois. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer A. Baird of Texas, Brian S. Austin asan Spicer both of Illinois, and grandson-in-law Adam Spicer. His younger brother, Wallace Cook, and nephew, Tony Cook, are still in Georgia.
Gene joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, following the Pearl Harbor attack. His group was sent to the Panama Canal Zone to guard that facility. As a sergeant, he work as an airplane mechanic. After the war, he and his wife settled in Georgiae they lived for 49 years. Gene worked mainly as a salesman, retiring with American General Insurance Company in 1985.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served the church as a branch president, stake high councilman, ward missionary, and temple ordinance worker at the Atlanta Georgia Temple.
Gene was an avid fan of baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves. He loved fishing, a good game of golf with buddies, and the occasional vacation road trip.
