Former Angels Camp police chief George Edward Baratono died Aug. 23 at a hospital in International Falls, Minn. after a long illness. He was 85.
He was born in Angels Camp to Joseph and Pauline (Muniz) Baratono and lived most of his life there. He was a longtime chief of police in Angels Camp and, before retiring, was the city's director of public works. He also served for many years as a Calaveras County sheriff's deputy.
With the exception of his final years and World War II, Mr. Baratono lived in Angels Camp his entire life.
During World War II, he served as a noncommissioned officer with the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry Regiment, in the Pacific Theater.
His campaigns included the Admiralty Islands, Leyte Gulf and Luzon. He was awarded a Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and two Presidential Unit Citations.
Earlier in his career, he was a baker, gold miner, bartender and rodeo cowboy, riding bareback broncs. Mr. Baratono is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Nolan and Susan, of International Falls; daughters and son-in-law, Noreen Huberty, of Mokelumne Hill, and Sharon and Buzz Fleming, of Murphys; a sister and brother-in-law, Irva Dean and Tom Donato, of Alameda; grandchildren, Renee Nevarez, of Lincoln, Placer County, Christopher Airola, of Loomis, Diane Andrews, of Penryn, Placer County, and Matthew Fleming, of Salinas, and Jared Baratono, of Bemidji, Minn., and Seth Baratono, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Albert; and his wife of 56 years, Elaine, in 2004. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge in Murphys. His grandson, the Rev. Matthew Fleming, will officiate.
His family will hold a private burial ceremony afterward. At the family's request, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or the Freemasons.
