He served as a control tower operator with the Army Air Corps in Casablanca during WWII.
In 1986 he retired from 35 years employment at Wonder Bread.
He married Beatrice Wilson, also of Ogden, on July 15, 1949. They lived in Washington Terrace where they raised four boys, shared each other?s lives, and were active and dedicated members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Darrell served in Bishoprics and in a Stake Presidency. He served as Bishop of the Washington Terrace 4th Ward for 5 years. He loved the youth and serving others. Darrell was an inspiring speaker and loved teaching the Gospel Doctrine class. He lost his dear Bea?s companionship when she passed away 17 years ago; also on October 25, in 1995.
Darrell later married Marcia ?Micki? Maitland on June 7, 1997 and they moved to South Ogden. Along with gaining a new companion, he also became another father and grandfather to Micki?s family.
He had 4 sons, 21 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren with Bea. When he and Micki joined lives, he enjoyed the new family bonds with her 2 sons, 4 daughters, 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Darrell enjoyed hiking, jogging and walking. Together, he and Micki spent time enjoying the foothills and canyons above Ogden. Micki was steadfast and ever present in her companionship, support and loving care throughout their marriage.
He volunteered as a mentor helping the 3rd graders learn their multiplication tables. He loved gardening. He especially enjoyed growing tomatoes. Darrell loved walking the foothills and up to Waterfall with his sons and grandchildren. He would take 3 mile early morning walks.
