    • Services for James M. "Jim" Crompton of McMinnville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, in the Yamhill Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop David Blanchard will officiate.
      Private family interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
      Mr. Crompton died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, in his home. He was 87.
      Born Oct. 9, 1919, in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., he was the son of Charles Woodhouse and Virginia (Andrews) Crompton. He grew up and went to school in Aberdeen, Wash.
      He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he was involved in the Berlin Airlift as traffic controller in Berlin. He received a letter of commendation from the Secretary of Defense for that work.
      He was involved in spy flights, or "ferret missions," over the Soviet Union to test Soviet radar capabilities during the Cold War.
      After leaving the service, Mr. Crompton returned to the United States and lived in California for a couple of years. He rejoined the Air Force, serving until 1953, then joined the Department of Defense in Tacoma, Wash.
      Later he became an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. He retired from the FAA in 1975.
      He and Venice Nordes were married Feb. 6, 1952, in Tacoma, Wash.
      Mr. Crompton lived in New Mexico, California and Alaska. He moved to Newport in 1989 and to McMinnville in 1993.
      He married Suntree Crompton in 2004.
      He was a member of the Latter-day Saints Church.
      In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Ronald of Yamhill and Phillip of Ashland; a stepson, Vaughn Nordes of Riverbank, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 2004y a stepdaughter, Kaye Matsen, and a brother, Robert Crompton.
