- A wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, Mary Kathleen Grow, died in an automobile accident June 24, 2000.
Mary Kay was born on June 18, 1943 in Washington D.C. to Stewart Lofgren Grow and Sarah Mabey Grow. She was the oldest of six children.
Mary Kay's family was the essence of her life. In her role as mother and grand-mother, her concern and devotion was uncompromising. As a daughter, she provided inexhaustible care and loving friendship to her mother. To her five siblings she was a source of comfort, guidance, and trust. To her friends and loved ones, Mary Kay's life personified dedication, optimism, encouragement and love.
Her professional efforts on behalf of Recreational Condominiums International and Novell/WordPerfect met with exceptional success as she managed and directed thousands. More significant, however, was her ability to inspire, elevate and advance those around her. Following her heart, she started a personal coaching business, which enabled her to employ her special gifts of motivating and elevating people one on one. She served as a mentor to help others create positive balance and approach their lives and professions with renewed energy, increased passion and enhanced commitment -- an accurate reflection of her approach to life.
A BYU graduate in Clothing and Textiles, Mary Kay was also a gifted musician in voice and on the marimba. She applied her talents in many capacities for the LDS Church, including serving as a member of the Young Women's General Board, Relief Society President, stake athletic director, choir director, teacher and advisor.
Mary Kay was a leader in the community, and served on many boards, including the Provo Education Foundation and as President of Neighbors Uniting Provo. She was an effective and creative leader, organizer and speaker -- an ardent and tireless champion for the underprivileged and underrepresented.
She is survived by her mother, Sarah; her five siblings, Stewart (Julie), Robert (Emma), Laraine Hakes (Russ), Jeanne Ann Whiting (Steve), and Carolyn Daily (Ken); her four children, Kerri Linn Schaefer (Carl), Marni Stadel (Bob), Tyler Startin (Tiffany), and Kristi Jo Nelson (Dan); her 12 adorable grandchildren, Ashlii, Amanda, Austen, Alexis, Dylan, Madelyn Rose, Jashua, Jake, Hayden, Holli, Morgan, Dalton, and one other expected; and former husband, Ronald Startin.
Friends and family are invited to a viewing at the Edgemont 14th Ward, 4000 Foothill Drive, Provo, Utah, on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 from 6-8 p.m. On the following day, Wednesday, June 28, funeral services will be held in the same building beginning with a viewing at noon, followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery.
