- Ione Marilyn Knudsen Hobby 1918 ~ 2006 Ione "Hobby" Knudsen was born April 14, 1918 to Delbert and Minnie Hobson in Melvern, Kansas. She died November 29, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hobby graduated from Osage County High School with Honors May 28, 1932. She continued her education at Emporia College of Nursing, graduating in June of 1936. After graduation, Hobby and her best friend Ruby Morgan went to Rock Springs, Wyoming and began working in the Rock Springs Hospital. Here she met Richard Knudsen. They were married November 19, 1939. Hobby and Dick moved to Seattle, Washington in 1940. She worked for a short time at one of the Seattle Hospitals. In 1943, Hobby and Dick moved to Salt Lake City were she started as a nurse at Holy Cross Hospital. In 1955 she moved to St. Marks Hospital where she continued her quest for knowledge by taking advantage of several advance nursing courses provided by St. Marks Hospital. One of the courses was Coronary Care Nursing. She completed the course in 1967. It was certified by the Utah Heart Association. After completion of this course, she was promoted to Head Nurse of the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. She also assisted in the development training of other nurses at St. Marks Hospital. She was later promoted to one of the Head Nurses for the entire Hospital. Hobby enjoyed her work; however, she decided to retire in 1991. After she retired, Hobby and Dick traveled in their RV with a group of their friends. She and Dick enjoyed their golf games with friends as they traveled. Hobby is survived by her son, Lyle (Linda) Knudsen; one granddaughter, Jill (Travis) Copfer; two great-grandsons, Zachary and Bailey; one and great-granddaughter, Zoey. She loved fishing, traveling and most of all, her dogs. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, where family and friends may call from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Humane Society of Utah or Companion Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O. Box 1317, West Jordan, Utah 84084, in remembrance of her love for animals.
