    • Dr. Derald A. Stuart, Resident of Arizona Passed away at his home in Arizona in May. He would have been 85 today. Dr. Stuart was a vice president and general manager, Missile Systems Division, at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, from 1970 till his retirement in 1987. He made major engineering and management contributions to the successful development and operation of the U.S. Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile System. Dr. Stuart was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah, in 1925. He served in the Navy during World War II and received Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees in physics from the University of Utah. While he was in graduate school he met and married his lifelong partner, Isabel. He was an associate professor at Cornell University, where he taught mechanics, engineering materials and mathematics and conducted research in materials, dynamic behavior of structures, elastic and plastic wave propagation and theory of the glassy state. In 1958 Dr. Stuart joined Lockheed Missiles & Space Company in Sunnyvale, Calif. as manager of the missile systems propulsion staff, with responsibility for developing the solid rocket propellant propulsion system for the Navy's Polaris fleet ballistic missile. Awards he received included: the John J. Montgomery Award from the National Society of Aerospace Professionals; the U.S. Navy Meritorious Public Service Award; the Navy Certificate Commendation, Steering Task Missile Group; and the S.B. Meyer, Jr., Award from the American Ceramic Society. He is listed in American Men of Science. Dr. Stuart spent his retirement years in Arizona with his beloved Isabel. He pursued many hobbies, including painting and woodworking, and continued to study mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and other sciences until he died. He is survived by his wife, his two children, and his two grandchildren, all of whom love and miss him. Those who wish to may honor Dr. Stuart by contributing to causes he supported, such as groups that help disabled veterans and foundations that forward education in the sciences.
