  	Steven James Schwan 1938 ~ 2003 Steven James Schwan, 64, a former resident of Salt Lake City, died Aug. 26, 2003 at his home in Columbia, Maryland. He had lung cancer. Mr. Schwan was born in Murray, Utah in 1938 to Alaine Dobbs Schwan and Lawrence Schwan. He graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City in 1956. He attended Stanford University and the University of Utah, where he received a B.S. in philosophy in 1963. He did graduate work at Cornell University. In 1959, Mr. Schwan married Sylvia Simon, also a Salt Lake native and student at the University of Utah. In 1966, he joined the U. S. Veterans Administration in Salt Lake City as a personnel management specialist. He later transferred to Oregon, Wisconsin, and Washington, DC. After 28 years of service, he retired as chief of the wage survey division. He then worked at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland until 2002. Mr. Schwan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Lee Schwan, and his wife of 40 years, Sylvia Simon Schwan. He is survived by his wife of one year, Betty Jones of Columbia, Maryland; daughters Clara Dixon of Richville, NY; Lenore Studt of Columbia, Maryland, and Joan Schwan of Sebastopol, CA; sister, Jane Hunsaker of Helena, MT and 11 grandchildren. A memorial gathering will take place at the Salt Lake City Cemetery on May 8 at 11 a.m. Published in Salt Lake Tribune on May 7, 2004
