    • Builder, Commuity Leader, Friend, and Father; Dee Livingood, 57 died June 3, 1995.

Dee was born in Ogden, Weber, Utah. His father, Tom was appointed to the Utah State Auditor's office, and the family moved to Salt Lake City. At the end of his father's term as Auditor, his family moved to Tennessee where his father workede atomic project. His father died at an early age, and in 1951, Dee, his mother, Hazel, and the family returned to Ogden, where she worked for Ogden City until her retirement. She died in 1983. Dee attended local schools and joined Ben Lomond High School's second graduating class of 1955.
While in High School, Dee began luring Lorraine Hilton out of her bedroom window to haunt the streets of Ogden. Dee was not the clean-cut person we would later know. During his High School years a black motorcycle jacket, long side burnd a duck-tail adorned his body. At 6'4" in height and 200 lbs. his nick name was "Big Dee." The high school yearbook did not list him as the "most likely to succeed." While in High School, and during summer vacations, Dee fibbed about his age and obtained work building the runway at Hill Air Force Base, and the extension to Pineview Dam. Dee and Lorriane were married in 1957 and he worked at the Ogden Union Station Mail Terminal and attended Weber State College. Soon he was working in construction full time, and making plans for a career in the industry he loved.
In 1967 at age thirty, with less than $1,000 capital, Dee started "Big-D" Construction Company. He started with almost nothing, but he has never been afraid of hard work and he believed in himself and his employees. He started his new compath a business culture of honesty, integrity, and hard work; where your word is your bond, with no difference between what you say and what you do. This simple business philosophy has created an environment for growth and success propelling Big-D Construction to its status as the largest construction company in the state of Utah, sixth largest in the West, and 131st largest construction firm in the United States. Dee has built great buildings from brick and stone, and found his success as a motivator of men and women.
In 1988, with his business running smoothly, Dee turned his attention to the commmunity. Dee has been chairman, president or board member of almost every community business, and professional organization in northern Utah. He always particd because it was the right thing to do, not for the recognition it brought. To name just a few of the more than twenty-five awards and recognitions he has received; Dee has been honored with the Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce "Wall of Fame" award, the Associated Builders and Contractors'"Lifetime Achievement Award," the Military Affairs' "Big Hat Award," the American Bar Association's "Liberty Bell Award," and an "Endowed Professorship" in his name at Weber State University. Ogden's mayor, Glen Mecham, proclaimed December 15, 1993 "Dee Livingood Day", in recognition of his civic contributions.
In 1994 Dee faced the biggest challenge of his life: lung cancer. He accepted his trial head on, determined to contribute the most to life he could, using every minute given to him.
Dee is survived by his wife Lorraine, four children, Marcia, Jack, Jena & Kate. Dee was always proud of the Ogden community and often said "It is my privilege to live in Ogden, north of the river, and my privlege to contribute everything Io this community."
We will all miss this great man.

Standard Examiner Monday, June 5, 1995 Our View (partial)

When Dee Livingood stepped down as president of the Ogden/Weber Chamber, these words were written about him but not published.
Life during his service to the Chamber has been fast for him; some days his plate has been so full of things to do that something was sacrificed.
Livingood embraces success and it loves him, too. He is ebullient, the eternal optimist. His stature reflects his company's name - Big D.
He looks life a yuppie - tall, bearded - who strolls around like his is "Mr. Cool."
He drives a car with vanity license plates. And he serves on corporate boards.
In a topsy-turvy generation, he has corporate good times. He has created jobs. He has built his reputation, his business, because of his value system. He is a visionary. He sees dozens and dozens of programs starting up in which he has hadd not only in his private business, but in the community.
Livingood is a defining personality. He is not part of the "greed generation." He is the "creed generation." There is no label of selfish on him as most yuppies wear.
      Not Livingood
