- LYMAN Grant J. Whitey Walker, 85, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at his home in Lyman after a long struggle with Lou Gehrigs Disease.
Walker was born July 6, 1920, in Lyman, to Levi Orson and Amelia Jane Grow Walker. He married Dorothy Mae Angwin in Lawton, Okla., on July 31, 1943. She died on Feb. 22, 1994.
Walker was raised on a ranch near Lyman where he was the ninth child of 16 brothers and sisters, one half-brother, one half-sister and three stepbrothers. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He attended then schools and lived in Lyman most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II serving from Sept. 18, 1942, to Nov. 9, 1945. While serving he received the Bronze Star Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
After returning from the war, he settled his family in Lyman. He eventually started work for the town of Lyman as a fire chief, town marshal, town clerk and public works director. He served for 30 years retiring in 1985. He was Citizen of tar in 1986 and Citizen of the Century in 2000.
Walkers pursuits included spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He was an avid rock hound.
He is survived by his children, Diana and husband Linden Belnap of Washington Terrace, Utah, Susan and husband Larry Carsten of Spanaway, Wash., Kenneth and wife Shauna Walker, Gary, Terry, and Judy and husband Butch of Lyman; 12 grandchi; 30 great-grandchildren with three on the way; brothers, Dwight, Darrell, Claude and Clinton Walker; sisters, Theo Lamb, Merle Rees, Joan Stringer and Mathel Anderson; half-brother, Guild Walker; half-sister, Lorna Maxwell; and two stepbrothers, Bruce and Keith Warren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son, Lenard; grandson, Quinton; parents; stepmother, Katie; five brothers; two sisters; and one stepbrother.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at the Lyman LDS Stake Center in Urie, near Lyman. Viewing will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, from 7-8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the fl at the Lyman LDS Stake Center in Urie.
