  	Lawrence was the son of Ezra Thurman Merkley and Alice Hacking Merkley, but his father died when he was quite young in 1919 during the Flu Pandemic. His mother married Wilson Murray in 1920 and Lawrence and his two sisters, Lorna and Eunice used Murray as their last name, although official adoption has not been found. Lawrence enlisted in the Navy 4 May 1942 under the name of Lawrence Murray. He served as an Electricians Mate First Class on the USS Medusa. He was honorably discharged on 7 November 1945. His brother-in-law, David Condon, ordered his veteran's gravestone 2 days after his death and specified the burial in Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, Park, Wyoming, United States. However, there is a veteran's stone in Maeser Fairview Cemetery, so whether or not another stone is in the other cemetery is unknown. Lawrence married Emylu Lillie in September 1947. They had 2 sons, Larry William and Paul Murray.
