      Colonel William Charles Webb 73, who retired in 1937, after 43 years of army service, died at his home today after a prolonged illness.
      Webb born in London came to the United States at the age of 6. He joined the Utah National Guard in 1896 and began a long military career that included service in the Spanish American War and first World War. He was awarded the silver str bravery. He was stationed in Panama and the Phillipines and also served on the Mexican Border ni 1916.
      He was promotd to Colonel in 1931. After his army retirement he served for 25 months as chief of police in Salt Lake City.
      Surviving include his widow and two sons. Captain William C. Webb, Jr., with the U.S. Army in Germany and Major Orrin R. Webb with the U.S. Army in Japan.

      William was born in Mentmore, Buckingham, England and came to the U.S. with his parents and family about 1883 on the ship Devon, if family records are correct. He attended a military academy in Salt Lake City, then saw action in the Phillippins during the Spanish-American war in 1898, distinguishing himself and earning a Lieutenant's Commission in the regular army. His military exploits can be found in the History of the Utah National Guard, 1916. The Salt Lake Sity Daily has this to say: "The energy, enthusiasm and utter indifference to danger displayed by Lieutenant Webb in many a battle have endeared him to his comrades and furnished themes for correspondents, not only of Utah papers but of other States,- and particular reference has been made to his conduct in the leading illustrated weeklies of the East."
      He retired as a Lt. Colonel, then was asked to assume command of the Salt Lake City Police Department after a shameful debacle left the agency without leadership.
