SANDY - Lt. (J.G.) Riter Muryel Stuart USNR has been posthumously awarded the Air Medal for meritorious service as a night-fighter piolet against enemy Japanese forces, the Navy Department today informed his parents.
Lt. Stuart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mureyl A. Stuart, Sandy, was a graduate of Jordan High School and former student of the University of Utah. Enlisting in the Navy as an aviation cadet, he received his commission in April 1944,at Corpus Chriti, Texas.
Mr Stuart later served as a pilot in a night fighting squadron, attached to the URS Bon Homme Richard.
Lt. Stuart was killed in a mid-air collision while serving as an instructor at Exmore, Virginia May 9, 1946.
