Born July 22, 1907, in Magna, Utah, son of Royal B. and Ruby Worthen DeLand. Married Vera Ferguson, November 1934. Divorced after 50 years. Married Edith Theakson, August 1985.Survivors: wife, Edith; brothers, Royal and George, Rogue River, Oregon; stepson, Harry Theakson, Santa Ana, Calif. Local residents, Gae Lyn DeLand, niece; Loni, Gary, and Richard DeLand, Eugene, Richard and Donald Penman, nephews; Wilma DeLand, sister-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews residing throughout the western states.
Shine was Murray City Chief of Police for 19 years, retiring in 1966. He served three years as a Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff. As chief, Shine received national acclaim for his crime prevention program with youth. His creation, the Boys and Girls Club was used as a national model by the National Peace Officers Assoc. In his youth Shine was a star basketball and baseball player and coach.
He was a Shriner and 32nd degree Mason, a member of the National, Utah and Northwest Peace Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Murray), and the Rogue River Multi-Service and Senior Center.
