John remained a member of the Society of Friends until 1783, during most of this period being connected with Merion Meeting. On 30 October 1758 he secured a certificate of removal for himself, wife and family to Abington Monthly Meeting, and 29 December 1760, one was signed for hin and his wife from Abington to Haverford Monthly Meeting, after the settlement of some complaint against him in case of property by John Roberts, Miller, of Merion.[GSP Collections Record of Abington Monthly Meeting..226] He did not produce this certificate of removal until the Monthly Meeting at Merion, 10 August 1764. the minutes of the Monthly Meeting at Haverford Meeting House, 14 January 1783, having this entry,"Merion Preparative Meeting forwards a compleint that John Righter neglects attendance at meeting and frequent company keeping with a neighboring woman, wife of another man," and 8 April 1783, "Since he will not listen to advise and desires to separate from Friends he has disunited himself from religious fellowship until he sincerely condems such conduct." His daughter Hannah was disowned about the same time, having "become the mother of an illegitame child." Perhaps Hannah Tunis Righter had died before this date, and the restraining hand of wife and mother had been removed.
