Ellen Hinchliffe was born 24 Dec 1801 in Upperthong, Almondbury, Yorkshire, England, the duaghter of John Hinchliffe and Hannah Collier. She married Thomas Midgley on 30 Sep 1821 in England, and they were the parents of eleven children, four of whom died before the age of four years.
The entire family joined the Church and wanted to come to Utah. Ellen's two sons, Jonathan and Joshua, and her husband came ahead in 1850 and 1853, Ellen came with the other children sailing on the ship "Samuel Curling" in 1855.
In Mormon Grove, Kansas they elected to travel with the last group to leave, and this was Milo Andreus's Company. On the plains many became sick with Cholera. She helped treat others until she also became sik with cholera and lung fever. She passed away 4 Sep 1855 near Ash Hollow, Wyoming, Nebraska Territory. Her remains were wrapped in a sheet and buried deep in the ground. The Midgley children went on to Salt Lake City and were happy to be with their father and brothers again. Thomas Midgley died 9 Sep 1870 in Nephi, Juab, Utah.
